Please disembark your cruise ship and make your way to the end of the pier where the shore excursions are being dispatched. Our Cruising Excursions representative will be waiting with a Cruising Excursions sign.
You will drive out of Limassol through the Phassouri citrus plantations to the Cyprus Wine Museum. The Museum details the history and development of wine production on the island which dates back 5500 years.
After a tour of the museum exhibits, you will sample 1 glass of Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine produced only in Cyprus since the 12th Century. There will be some village bread and raisins. The tasting will either take place in the outdoor courtyard (weather permitting) or else indoors in St Hilarion Hall.
The Wine Museum sells bottles of wine from many wineries all over Cyprus. You will then continue to visit the Castle of Kolossi. The Castle served as headquarters of the Knights of St John from 1291 after the fall of Acre. They consoled themselves by producing Commandaria wine (one of the oldest named wines in the world). The wine’s name takes its name from the French word Commanderie meaning Headquarters. The current structure dates back to the 15th century and is a fine example of military architecture.
Your bus will then ascend the lower foothills to Lambouri Winery for a tour and Wine tasting at Kato Platres village. The winery produces about a dozen types of wine including organic wines.
The Lambouri Winery has acquired the exclusive rights of producing kosher wine on the island. This is produced according to Hebrew practices and under the supervision of a rabbi who visits the island regularly to ensure correct procedures at all stages of the production. In addition it produces Commandaria, a sweet red wine which is recognized as a wine with controlled name of origin since 1990. The region defined as "Commandaria" includes 14 villages all lying on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains north of Limassol (such Lambouri). The production of Commandaria in Cyprus dates back to the Knights of St John in the 12th Century, making it one of the oldest names wines in the world.
After the tour, there is a tasting of 3 wines plus Commandaria with bread and raisins.
