The term Monsopiad refers to a famous Kadazan warrior who lived 300 years ago. Legend has it that when the warrior was born the sacred Bugang bird who had made its nest on the roof of the family home also hatched its eggs. The warrior’s father took this as a good omen and decided his son would have special powers.
Over the years the son took training and proved to be an exceptional fighter and took on a reputation that no one challenged him. He became so powerful that the villagers became afraid of him and plotted his death. Although they killed him they also respected him and were thankful for what he had done and so a monument was erected in his honour and the village named after him.
This tour takes you on a remarkable journey into the past when head-hunters roamed the land of Borneo. Run by his direct descendants, this rustic village is dedicated to conserving the heritage and culture of the biggest ethnic tribe in Sabah - the Kadazans.
You will gain insight into the way of life of this beautiful tribe through stories, dances and artefact displays. The highlight of this tour is the visit the House of Skull, where 42 skulls hang as proof of Monsopiad's greatness as a warrior in defending his village. Through age-old mystical wisdom, the Kadazanritualist, the Bobohizan performs ancient ceremonies to preserve the harmony between human beings, nature and the spiritual world.
This is a wonderful way to explore the dramatic and interesting history and culture of Borneo and is perfect for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the main towns.
