Places to Visit:

President's Office - Begin your tour and pass by the president's office and take some pictures in front of the main gates. Unfortunately, it is not permitted to enter inside of this building.

Hukuru Miskiy (Male Friday Mosque) - Built in 1658, it is one of the oldest and most decorated mosques in Male. It was built over an older mosque, constructed in 1153 and it was ordered by the first Muslim Sultan of Maldives called Mohamed Bin Abdullah after his conversion.

Muliaage - Opposite the Hukuru Mosque you will see Muliaage, the official residence of the president of the Maldives. First constructed in 1914 and inhabited temporarily by most of the Maldivian presidents. Muliaage houses the tomb of Moroccan scholar Abul Barakat Yousef Al-Berberi, who is believed to have introduced Islam to the Maldives in 1153.

Republic Square - Finish your tour in the Republic Square (Jumhooree Maidhaan in Divehi) built in 1989. On the eastern side of the square you will see the police headquarters and the official flag post, on which the largest Maldivian flag in the country is hoisted. On the sea facing side is the Presidential Jetty used by the President and officials to travel to various locations.

Fish Market and Local Market - These cannot be missed! The markets are very vibrant and full of colour! The local fish market is a great place to watch the day's catch being brought in from the adjacent fishing harbour. You can find almost every kind of fish here, gigantic tuna fish, swordfish, octopus, groupers, the list goes on...
From the local markets you will find a large choice of fruits, vegetables and a variety of foods. Although 90% of food products are imported you will still find some Maldivian delicacies and specialities such as the famous rihaakuru (fish-based paste), the Maldivian Githeyo mirus chilli, the Maldivian Kurumba coconut and the Areca nut.

National Museum (Optional) - Located in Sultan's Park, the museum displays a diverse collection of artefacts including - relics from the pre-Islamic period, thrones, royal furniture, costumes and textiles, coins, ornaments, coats of arms and armour. The museum is open for visiting from 10:00 until 14:00 from Sunday to Thursday.

Entrance fees for the National Museum is $8 - $10 USD per person. This is payable on the day.

Sultan's Park (Optional) - Take a walk in Sultan's Park surrounding the museum. Sultan's Park was once part of the grounds of the Sultan's Palace. It's one of the very few parks in Male and it is definitely the nicest public space in the capital.

Entrance fees for Sultan's Park is $5 - $10 USD per person. This is payable on the day.

Souvenirs Street (Optional) - You will find exclusive souvenir shops in this street. Postcards, t-shirts, magnets, sarongs, shells, Maldivian hand crafted wares, jewellery, paintings and much more, you will find many items you will want to take home with you!
