Walk the streets of this poor town as you discover hidden facts of one of the first colonial settlements in Nicaragua before enjoying an outside visit of the ruins of San Francisco convent.
Head west, back towards the coastline to Chinandega city. Known as the city of oranges, it is considered the second-best area of the country for is rich fertile soil and high levels of agricultural production. The region is famous for its sugar cane, bananas, grains and shrimps.
Once in the city we will visit the pre-Columbian art Chorotega Nicarao Museum. This small museum is bursting with its extensive collection of ceramic, lithic and gold, all presented in a logical timeline.
Head over to the town connected to El Realjo, El Viejo.
Here will can immerse yourself into the warm and welcoming culture and get the chance to taste the local speciality., Rosquillas Viejanas. A delicious handmade ring shape treat made from crunchy cornmeal.
With your taste buds tickled you will then visit the Basilica church. If the doors are open, you will be able to take a look around or just stop and take photos.
Your final visit will be Santa Ana church. The patron saint of Chinandega. It has withstood over a century of violent storms, earthquakes, and wars. Making this church the most important in Chinandega.
Enjoy some free time to look at the handicrafts from the local area and purchase your souvenirs before you board your transportation as you head back to the coast and back to Corinto.
